Learning how to play the guitar is not as difficult as you may think...

 All you need is a guitar and a chord chart - that's it!
 A chord chart is just a book that shows you how to
 play common guitar chords.

 Simply learn a few basic chords like E, A, D. Most pop,
 rock and folk songs contain only three or four chords
 anyway. While your left hand creates the chord,
 your right hand does the strumming.

When you are learning guitar you will probably find that the strumming is the
most difficult part to master. Another hard part is the speed at which your left
hand can make the new chord. Don't worry too much, you will be able to
memorize all the basic positions within days.

You will probably want to choose an electric guitar while
you are learning. This way, you can practice quietly
without the amplifier until you become a better guitarist.
I recommend buying a beginner's guitar pack, because
you usually get an amplifier thrown in with the deal...

How long it takes to get good at playing the guitar
depends mostly on how much you practice - It's all
about learning and practicing - Iam not a believer in
'natural talent'. You should be able to pick up basic
chords and strumming patterns within two to six weeks.
